Natural Gas (NG) is an extremely flammable gaseous hydrocarbon variety of fuel that often forms with coal, and since natural gas is lighter than coal it generally forms above the coal seams. Raw fossil fuel gas is a mixture of various hydrocarbon gases, however, the principal ingredient in natural gas is methane, a natural compound that's formed whenever plant and animal matter decays.

Methane (CH4) is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that's composed of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. Natural gas is, therefore, a non-renewable fossil fuel that's pumped up a narrow pipe to the surface where it's kept in big storage tanks or underground in old gas wells.

Natural gas is a domestically available, clean-burning fuel used principally for heating and cooking and as a safety measure chemical odorants such as mercaptan are added so any escaping gas can be detected by its distinctive smell of rotten eggs. Natural gas burns more cleanly than oil and coal and has fewer emissions of sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen once burned. Being a clean combustible burning fuel is one of the main reasons that the utilization of natural gas, particularly for electricity generation, has grown so much over the last decade or so and is expected to grow even a lot in the future. However, fossil fuel gas isn't a viable replacement for oil or coal because it is harder to move and store making it more of a regional fuel.

Also, natural gas can be compressed into a liquid, it can be used as an alternative fuel for cars and vans storing a lot of energy in a smaller volume than conventional gasoline. Natural gas can be utilized in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a transportation fuel however natural gas vehicles require special modifications to safely transport the high-pressure gas.

Greenhouse gases in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are released into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels gas, however, unlike oil and coal burning natural gas produces much less of these harmful gases creating it a much cleaner fossil fuel.
